It was the biggest competition of the year this weekend for many of our gymnasts, as they headed to Liverpool for the British Championships 2019!
Our Under 12 boys kicked off the competition on Thursday; Jamiah Richards-Leacock, Xandon Williams, James Gilulley, Harry Nicholson, and Lucas Morris. All of the boys competed really well and made great improvements from the English championships 2 weeks ago. Jamiah finished an impressive 9th on High Bar and 18th all-around. Out of Britain’s top 74 gymnasts at this age group the boys did a really good job and made a great start to the weekend.
Later on in the Women’s Espoir competition we had some more success. Mabelle Dawson, who was competing at her first British Championships, had a fantastic competition managing to finish an amazing 14th place all-around! Renee Pullin had a tough day but didn’t give up, finishing 23rd all-around and qualifying for the bar finals in 4th place.
On Friday our Under 14 boys took to the stage; Loui Heap, Jacob Ryan, Jed Solomon, Orestis Bacon and Owen Craig. With some great work and a few mistakes it was a difficult day for these boys, but they all gained a valuable experience from competing at such a major event. Jed Solomon had a good competition placing 4th on Parallel Bars and 8th on Floor with some very clean routines. With another year to go at this level Jed will be looking to make a big step up in 2020.
On Saturday our Senior competitors Ellee Cheetham and Elliott Cooper both had great rounds. Ellee built on last year’s results placing 12th all-around and qualified for the vault final, whilst Elliott finished 14th all-around and made it through to the rings finals.
Sunday was an exciting day for our 3 gymnasts that managed to qualify for apparatus finals. First up was Renee, and with an incredible performance on bars she became a silver medallist. This is an absolutely amazing achievement for Renee at this point in her gymnastics career and also for her coaches Mrs Leigh and Miss Jacks. In the Senior finals Ellee finished 8th on vault and Elliott 5th on rings. We’re very proud of all three gymnasts after such a long weekend they had some fantastic performances and did the club very proud. Also well done to all of our gymnasts that competed across the weekend, we hope everyone enjoyed the experience of competing at such a big event.
Amongst all of the action we also saw Mr Leigh receive the Master Judge award, as recognition for all of his past work judging major competitions at an international level. Congratulations Mr Leigh!
